Swale Film Festival Forewords

Foreword by Derek Wyatt MP

It gives me great pleasure to support the Swale Film Festival 2008. When I ran a summit in 2003 on Sheppey to create a local community cinema I said that one way to develop an interest in film was to have a annual film festival. We now have a group lead by film producer Ken Rowles and his team who have set up the film festival for Swale. Their effort to bringing you a selection of screenings, educational events, speakers, competitions and workshops, has been realised through the generosity of the festival sponsors and supporters to whom I would like to offer my sincerest gratitude. I would also like to thank you for supporting this festival through your attendance of the various events. We all hope that this is the first of many film festivals in Swale.

Foreword by Ken Rowles Festival Co-Director

Welcome to the Swale Film Festival 2008. This festival is held to promote films within Swale at a time when one of our cinemas The New Century in Sittingbourne faces closure due to poor ticket sales. The festival committee is pleased to bring you a diverse range of films, workshops, competitions and discussions. We are screening films over the three days that will show the talent of local filmmakers and screen classic films that have local interest. The willingness of professionals to come and discuss their work shows they are keen to collaborate and encourage others to promote filming in Kent. We all hope that the success of this initiative will continue and extend the Swale Film Festival be held in future years. The committee would like to thank the sponsors and the supporters who have made this festival possible.

Foreword by Kevin O' Reilly Festival Co-Director

At  the launch of Screen on Sheppey in 2006 Derek Wyatt said he hoped that one day there would be a Swale Film Festival.  There were a few raised eyebrows in the audience but thanks to local filmmaker Ken Rowles and his enthusiastic team of volunteers, this dream will shortly become a reality.  I am delighted that we have been invited to take part in this exciting venture.  I hope this event will mark another important episode in Sheppey’s proud history of public cinema. People on the Island have expressed their wish for a cinema on Sheerness and our involvement in this festival shows how much progress we have made in recent years. I urge people on Sheppey to participate in events both on the Island and elsewhere in Swale.
